Elephant Junction, Thekkady – Taming Of The Tuskers!

Long time ago I read an article about Elephant Junction, Thekkady in a magazine. What remained with me was the part that Elephant Junction allows travelers to bathe the tuskers! This activity in itself sounded so much fun to me that I included promptly it in my ever-expanding bucket list. Later, during creating our itinerary for Kerala, I put the trip to Elephant Junction among the top three priority list and my kind travel companion happily obliged.

Located at Murukaddy PO of Thekkady, Elephant Junction wears many feathers. Apart from elephant ride, it offers bamboo rafting, hitch hiking, jungle jeep safari and sky walk. This reserve forest also has accommodation facilities along with dining.

Though we were itching to spend a night there in the jungle resort; our limited time-limit made us to let this opportunity go. Instead of it, we opted for the half-a-day program. Now I have been always vocal about animals’ rights and in Elephant Junction, I noticed it happily that the elephants were healthy and well loved and cared after.

Our half-day program included many exciting components such as two hours ride on elephant’s back, bathing the tuskers and clicking pictures with them, visiting the cardamom processing factory, having hot beverages and snacks to name a few. Though it seemed quite expensive from our budget travelers’ views, my gut feeling told me that it would be worth the penny and at last, my gut feeling proved right and how.

The beautiful and exciting elephant ride through the thick forest looked surreal from every aspect. A mixed aroma of spices was hitting my nostrils time and often and I felt really heady with pleasure. As my friend loves photography, so she went berserk with clicking photos on her mobile phone continuously. On the other hand, my daughter absolutely loved the bathing and feeding session with the tuskers, though she was kept at bay with my friend and it was only I, who took part in this activity alone.

At the end of our trip to Elephant Junction, we felt happy and content at the same time and promised ourselves to visit this place again in future.
