When I got to learn about the timeless history of Lake Palace Thekkady, my friend and I decided to spend a night in Lake Palace. It is situated amidst Periyar tiger reserve and one has to reach
there by only a boat-ride over Periyar Lake. All these bits of information only accumulated our excitement and impatience till we arrived at the resort.
One fine afternoon we landed at the office of Kerala Tourism Corporation as this government outfit runs Lake Palace Thekkady. From there, we were taken for a boat ride and boy, what a trip it was! The thick greenery surrounding the lake was truly breath-taking and we did spot a mélange of birds and few sambar deer.
The first sight of Lake Palace took our breath away completely. We got to know that it was a former summer of house of the king of Travancore and during the British era, many viceroys and
governor general used to spend their leisure times here. My only concern was - whether any wild animals will get into the premise of the hotel during night but the boat-driver assured me on the
The old-world regal charm of this resort was truly astounding. We were treated as royal guests by the courteous staff. We booked only one room and when we checked out that it had a lake-view from the window and boasted Wi-Fi connection, it felt almost surreal amidst such a thick jungle.
This resort only has six rooms and this characteristic certainly lends it a homely vibe that we loved. The spacious badminton court forced us to get down playing badminton, while my kid was thoroughly pampered by the staff. But what completely swept us off our feet were the royal dinner spread during night and the breakfast buffet in the next time. I have never tasted such amazing foods anywhere.
We remained awake till the middle of the night and monitored a gang of tuskers, wild boars and barking deer respectively, who came to drink the water of Periyar Lake one by one. We left Lake Palace Thekkady next morning for our next destination. But the serenity of this place will remain with me forever.
