American College, Madurai- A Temple of Knowledge

I had spent about four days in Madurai by now. It was the fifth day of my stay and we had had enough of travel all through these days. However notwithstanding that I decided to visit the American College in Madurai. Being a teacher by profession, I have a keen interest in going to places carrying knowledgeable resources. As I had already planned to make a visit to the temple, I decided to leave Sanvi in the hotel room. She was too small to understand about colleges and education system, therefore I planned and travel all by my own.

From the hotel the college was not too far off. I took a local bus from the nearest bus stand and reached at the American College in Madurai. This college is one of the top most colleges in Madurai which aims at providing higher education to the students. Even students desire to study in this prestigious college. The college has a good reputation in not just Tamil Nadu or South India, but it is also known in foreign countries and people comes from outside to study in this college.

The college was established by the American Mission long back in the year 1841. After 1931, the college became an independent and free body and out of the mission. After it became a separate body, it came under the jurisdiction of Kamraj University of Madurai.

As I had a friend in that college as a faculty, it was easy for me to get inside. I made rounds of the campus and tried to learn their way of teaching. There are different facilities provided in the college, out of which some the basics are library, hostel, computer center, laboratories, classrooms, chapel and a placement cell. Academically, the college provides 12 post graduate and 13 undergraduate training programs. The college also has 7 departments of research.

The infrastructure of the college is mind blowing. It resembles old forms of art and architecture. The entire college is built of red brick in the Saracenic style of architecture. The natural surrounding the college also provides a sound atmosphere to the students to kick start their day for learning.
